FOCUS - Eliminate the competition. Jesus said it is impossible to have two masters
I have to confess...I struggle in prayer. That'll surprise people, right?
Not speaking about public corporate prayers, but the private alone time with The Lord kinds of prayer and meditation. Fact of the matter is I believe in my mind and heart, that the Lord's prayer is as long as it is, and structured in such a way, so that it's nearly impossible to get through it without becoming distracted. Let me qualify that statement; I mean to say you will definitely become distracted if you aren't focused while praying that Lord's prayer.
I think the struggle in that prayer is important and helpful. It forces you to really take the words to heart in order to get through it. This realization for my part proves to me that God and the Devil are present at all our prayer and Bible study times. One Father is listening and the other father (the father of lies) is whispering distractions. But before that eternal battle of wills can even get started you've got to begin at the beginning. How can you say you're truly keeping your eyes on The Lord, watching, when you're not in his Word and not on your knees in prayer?
To grow in love with God, one needs to get to know Him. It goes without saying that we cannot love someone we do not know. You get to know God and what He has done for you when you focus on Him. In order to ensure that we will be passionate for God later, we need to walk with Him now and begin to obey Him in the smallest tests. Walk closely with Him NOW. Follow Jesus’ example by praying constantly and consistently.
It's important to understand that focusing on things above, is about learning defensive blocks through muscle memory, learned by performing the seemingly tedious tasks called prayer and growth through study. When we do this we are defensively preparing our hearts and minds to do battle against sin and distractions.
You'll do it in your work. You'll do it when planning for a trip. You'll do it when you're growing your wealth. You'll do it when the doctor's instructions tell you your life depends upon it. You'll do it when it's important to you.
So what is stopping you from doing it for the One who holds your eternal peace in his hands?
Let's take a look at the Creators instructions and try to figure out...
What's The Point?
Real quick and to the point - Jesus told us that He is the point.
John 17:3 “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”
This is why Christ came, why he was sent, to bring the gospel (The Word) so that we would know it and share it. Jesus wants us to focus upon him because he knows that nothing in Hell can ensnare (distract) a heart that trusts in the Lord, but you must focus on Him. You must embrace his kingdom, his authority, his grace and his Word.
Let us...
...Throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Hebrews 12:1-2
...Think carefully about this Jesus whom we declare to be God’s messenger and High Priest. Hebrews 3:1
...Focus on this one thing: Forget the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us. Philippians 3:13-14
...Set our sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Colossians 3:1
...Keep looking to the Lord our God for his mercy, just as servants keep their eyes on their master, as a slave girl watches her mistress for the slightest signal. Psalm 123:2
...Remember:
The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them." Psalm 91:14-15
...Remember:
They who focus on God do not fear bad news; they confidently trust the Lord to care for them. Psalm 112:7
...Remember:
You (God) will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! Isaiah 26:3
Worshipping the Lord in spirit and in truth is getting our heart to a point where we can’t breathe until we are completely focused on Him and His presence. When you fix your thoughts on God, God fixes your thoughts.
You'll never miss the opportunity to know him if you're staying focused upon him. You won't miss his presence. You won't miss his voice. You won't miss his words. You won't miss his comments about your concerns. You won't miss his love. He'll give you hope in this present crisis. He'll take care of your soul. He'll help you love others as he has loved you. He'll revive your spirit. He'll gift you with revelatory joy for your future.
There is no doubt that God will bless the pursuit of a passion for Him, and he will glorify His name through it. Focus upon Him because he's never taken his eyes off of you.
The cure is to do the “first works,” those things that caused you to grow in love with God in the first place. Get back, back to where you once belonged. Get back Jojo.
