“I want to see a mighty flood of justice, an endless river of righteous living.”
— Amos 5:24
An exhortation to hate evil, love good, and maintain justice in things. Perhaps the Lord God Almighty will have mercy on us if we follow his commands in this regard. Perhaps there is a karmic moment awaiting each of us. It may be The Lord has arranged a day when those of us who live our lives as if we are fleeing frantically from a lion, and have the misfortune to run straight into a bear, only then to escape both lion and bear, and arrive safely at home, and while reclining thankfully in our easy chair, we are bitten by a serpent hidden behind the sofa.
Justice is what The Father wants. Not cultic sanctimony. His justice for many, judgment and exile. For so many draw very near and dear to the seat of violence, celebrating their own magnificence with abandon while not becoming sick over the breaking down of society. Let there be a general reformation of good and just manners among each of us. Let our land be watered with it. Let that just stream run strong and wide. May it never be stopped up by corruption, muddied by partiality, or perverted by fear. A society that loves church participation, but without a heart for God, will fall into moral decay, and a sign of that will be injustice. It is said politics makes liars of us all. Jesus says how we care for our poor and voiceless as a society says a great deal about the collective faith of our nation.
True worship is done in “spirit and in truth” (John 4:24). A heart that truly worships God will love God’s justice. They will hate a bribe and a false scale (Exodus 8:21). When a whole society lives justly and seeks righteousness, the effect will be a perpetuating river of blessing from God. Until Jesus returns we will not see such a society, or experience the fullness of this. But one day soon, praise The Lord very soon, there will be a “never-failing stream” in the City of God near the Tree of Life. (Revelation 22:1-3)
